Introduction
Traffic rules tries to accommodate as much scenarios as possible. But it cant accommodate all. In the case where you are faced with a scenario where there is no traffic rule that stipulates exactly how to act. It is your responsibility as a driver to assess each situation and make the best overall decision regarding safety and consideration.
Fundamental rules
- Show consideration and care to all on and next to the road
- Show consideration to children, elderly people, with dissabilities and traffic wardens
- Do not obstruct or cause any unnecessary disruptions.
- There are no individual "rights," only shared obligations.
When rules arent very clear "The gray area"
There will come a time that you need to make a best-guess assessment of the situation as the traffic rules does not cover all scenarios.
Example of clear rules
- Stop at a stop sign: You must come to a complete stop when arriving at a stop sign. You must not drive over the stop line
- No U-Turn sign: You are not allowed to make a U-Turn at the junction
Example of NOT clear rules
- Traffic congestion pushed cars over a roundabout, Who should drive first?: Usually you give way to cars on the roundabout. But if the traffic congestion has become so bad that it goes over the roundabout you will never get a chance to drive if you only giveway to cars on the roundabout. Thus mutual consideration needs to be applied and cars will need to make way for you
- Right-hand rule in a parking lot: Sometimes cars all drive towards each other at the same time in a parking area. In a parking lot you always give way to cars on your right, however if all the cars arrive together at the same time mutual consideration must be applied
If you are reported to the police for not following rules
In both these cases you have to always drive safely. If you are reported to the police that you did not obey any of the traffic rules (Either clear rules or Not clear rules) the court will consider the scenario in full and determine if you acted accordingly
Drive safely and show consideration
Safety is the number 1 focus for Swedish driving license. It does not matter how quick you can change gears or how good you are at reversing. Showing consideration and safety for all road users is fundamental.
- Show your intentions in good time
- Show your intentions clearly
- Always try to make eye contact with pedestrains
- Always anticipate different scenarios and be ready to act
- Keep a safe distance, slow down if required
- You must use your horn only to warn someone of danger (You cannot use your horn to notify someone where you are or to say Hi)
- Drive slow when required, speed up when required. Accommodate other drivers on the road
